This is the second year that we've started our onions from seed and I'm really pleased with how the plants are looking so far. In the past, I always used to grow them from "sets" which are small onion bulbs that you can purchase in garden centers.
Two years ago, I planted some onion seedlings I'd purchased at Upriver Greenhouse and was stunned by how large the onion bulbs were that I ended up with in the fall.
Last year, I started some from seed but didn't have as good a result (size-wise) than the plants from Upriver. I decided I needed to start them earlier indoors. This year, I started them in late February and you can see that they are looking really good. And who knows, maybe they've been enjoying our cool wet spring?
Throughout the summer, I will harvest some as scallions by picking every other onion. The ones remaining will then have enough room to grow into large bulbs, which I'll harvest in the early fall.
