We are growing two kinds of potatoes this year: the old standby 'Yukon Gold' and a fingerling called 'Red Thumb.' The odd thing is the size difference between the two rows of plants. The 'Yukon Golds' are much taller than the 'Red Thumbs.' I've been using an organic fertilizer on them from the mail-order company Gardens Alive called Root Crops Alive. I'm getting ready to cover the surface of the soil with grass clippings to help the soil retain moisture and also to protect any potatoes growing near the surface from the sun's rays.
Did you know that once the potato plants start blooming, you can (carefully) dig up some new potatoes? I don't take too many this time of year. however, as I like having a large crop to dig up and store in the fall.
