I just heard that there is a wind advisory tomorrow for Eastern Wash., North Idaho and western Montana. The winds are due to escalate sometime Monday afternoon and we could experience gusts of up to 45-50 mph.
To be on the safe side, I just put stakes and twine on my corn beds since the stalks can easily blow over in the wind - that has to be one of the most depressing sights to any vegetable gardener!
I put stakes at each corner of the corn beds, then ran twine around the perimeter of each bed at a height of about 15". Corn stalks have very short, stubby roots so this will provide them with a little support when it gets windy. Every 2-3 weeks, I'll repeat this process as the corn stalks get taller so they will have good support throughout the rest of the growing season.
If you are growing corn, you might consider doing this as well. I've also added some twine around the tomato plants that are growing on either side of a vertical sheet of concrete reinforcing wire to give them extra support.
