We are growing several types of lettuce this year but this lettuce is a real stand-out. It is a red Romaine-type lettuce called 'Sea of Red.' I've never grown it before but I'm very pleased with how it has performed this year. And it looks fantastic in salads because of its stunning color.
The other varieties we're growing are 'Prizehead', 'Oakleaf', 'Mesclun' and 'Speckled'. The hot weather tends to make lettuce taste a little on the bitter side and it will have a tendency to bolt to seed, but the 'Sea of Red' is holding up nicely. I intend to plant more lettuce within the next week so we can have more to harvest through the summer.
