Weather change

Doesn't the cooler weather in the mornings make you think fall is in the air? It doesn't seem possible to me but I'm hoping we will get a nice Indian summer to make up for our chilly spring and early summer.

Each year, when I notice the weather is getting more fall-like, it makes me think of what I need to do to wind up the vegetable garden for the year.

One of the most important things to do - if you haven't already - is to pinch back the tips of your tomato plants. That will force the plants to focus their energy on ripening the existing tomatoes. I would even remove any flowers from the plants because there just isn't going to be enough time for them to develop and ripen.

If you are growing any vining plants like melons, winter squash, cucumbers or cantaloupes, trim back the ends of the vines for the same reason.

The stalks on our onion plants are starting to fall over and dry up. This is a good time to cut back the water to them so they can begin drying out for storage.

Let's hope we still have about 4 more weeks of good growing weather!
