While doing my fall clean-up last week, I kept marveling at all of the wonderful fall colors around me. It made me take stock of the plants that provide us with late-season color: Snowball Viburnums (Viburnum opulus 'Roseum'), Burning Bushes (Euonymus alata), shrub roses, American Cranberry Bush (Viburnum trilobum), Crabapples, and Sedum 'Autumn Joy' and 'Vera Jameson.' Even our blueberry bushes and peonies are providing a lot of color. All of these plants are fabulous during the growing season but the added bonus of fall color really puts them at the top of my list of favorites.
The other pleasant surprise was seeing perennials that were still in bloom, even though we had some frosts in the past week or so. Those plants include phlox, asters, yarrow (Achillea) and lavender.
If your landscape doesn't include much color this time of year, this is the time to take note so you can start adding plants that provide fall colors next spring.
