Weather alert - frosts are coming

Starting Monday and throughout the week, it looks like the temperatures will be dipping low enough to cause killing frosts in our gardens.

If you still have tender veggies growing in your garden - such as peppers, melons, tomatoes, summer squash, beans and eggplants - I would recommend picking them within the next 24 hours.

You can also cover the plants with a floating row cover to buy a few extra days, but in the grand scheme of things, the crops won't ripen much more in the next few days.

Crops like carrots and parsnips can stay in the ground a little longer, until the soil really starts to freeze. Onions should be out of the garden and drying somewhere in a protected area.

Take a look at the 10-day forecast on weather.com to see what's coming. And let's look on the bright side: at least we got a few extra weeks of decent weather which sort of - but not entirely - made up for the slow start to our growing season!
