It's a snowy world out there

Happy New Year, everybody! Now that the holidays are behind us, I plan to get back into gardening mode and post more frequently.

But first, I'm still marveling at the beautiful, snowy world outside. For those of you who don't live in this area, we received about a foot of new snow between Tuesday and Wednesday night. It's been quite chilly ever since so the snow really hasn't gone anywhere.

While I know the snow can make it difficult to travel and remind us of just how far off spring is, it serves an important function that we gardeners need to keep in mind: it is an insulating blanket that protects our plants from temperature fluctuations and provides them with plenty of moisture as it melts. (yes, it will melt someday)

The photo above is a view from the window of my home office, looking down on our backyard. We might as well enjoy the beauty outdoors while it lasts!
