Garden update

Wasn't today's weather just heavenly? I couldn't get enough of that sunshine and actually got to work in the garden for a change.

I decided to finally get my pea seedlings into the ground. It's a little scary, considering how chilly the weather has been, but I think they'll be OK. I started the peas indoors about 3 weeks ago and moved the seedlings out to our little unheated greenhouse a week ago, just to start easing them into the real world.

As you can see, they look pretty good. I'm using a trellis made from two sheets of concrete-reinforcing wire for their support. With a little luck, they'll do just fine. And if you're wondering what those plants in the background are, that's my husband's garlic bed, which he planted last fall.

As far as the rest of the veggie garden goes, I also planted the leek seedlings today. The onion seedlings have been languishing in the garden for a few weeks, and I've sowed the seeds for carrots, parsnips, lettuce, Swiss chardm, collards and beets about 10 days ago. Everything is taking its time germinating but as long as they do germinate, I'll be a happy gardener.

There are still tomato, eggplant and pepper seedlings in the greenhouse and they are growing beautifully. My plan is to get them into the ground by the end of this month. It will be really important for all of us to keep an eye on the weather forecasts just in case more frosts come our way.
