Annuals - Petunia 'Picasso'

I have a couple of large hanging baskets on my front porch. Every year, I tend to plant Ivy Geraniums in them because I've had good success with them.

Last summer, I saw containers of Petunia 'Picasso' around town and thought it had that "cool factor." The flowers are a deep pink and the petals are edged with a chartreuse border. If you click on the photo, you can view a larger image to see the details better.

So this spring, I decided to pick some up. I bought them at Liberty Park greenhouse and there are only 3 plants per container. I learned something interesting from the greenhouse owner, Jim Alice: he told me that these petunias won't do well unless you lower the pH of the potting soil. I decided to sprinkle some of the sulfur that I use in our blueberry beds and as you can see, they are thriving. I'm just tickled with them... although I should add that, as usual, I'm a year behind the latest trends!

I also wanted to mention that my husband Bill recently set up a drip irrigation system to water all of my containers. It's so nice to not have to worry about the plants getting enough moisture during this warm weather. Thanks, honey! :o)
