We are on borrowed time. In theory, the average date of the first frost is in mid-September and here we are almost into October.
A few friends of mine have already gotten a killing frost in their gardens so we really need to keep an eye on the weather forecasts. When I look at the 10-day extended forecast for Spokane on weather.com, I'm seeing that there are some lows in the 30's predicted for the end of next week.
If you're hoping to squeeze out some time beyond that, be sure to have plant covers close at hand. I use cloth paint tarps, plastic tarps, flannel sheets and frost blankets (a heavier type of floating row cover) to protect tender plants like tomatoes and summer and winter squash.
Be sure to stay up on your harvesting and preserving, too -- whether you can, freeze or dehydrate your produce -- so that you won't have to scramble to get everything picked at a moment's notice. (been there, done that, with a flashlight even!)
It's always hard to see the garden get frosted but at least we've gotten some pretty nice weather over the past month. Hopefully we will have a glorious, beautiful fall.
