Here is a link to my column in today's edition of The Spokesman-Review: Starting with seeds. In it, I outline the basic details of seed-starting, which is a fun and economical way to grow many different kinds of veggies and flowers.
Recently, some readers have asked me to post guidelines on when to start seeds indoors. I started some artichoke seeds a few days ago (there will be more on that this week in case you're curious about it) and will be starting tomato, eggplant, pepper and leek seeds within the next two weeks.
I will start bean and corn seeds indoors around May 1st and plan to start summer and winter squash seeds around May 7th. I'll keep you posted on my seed-starting routine.
Here are some links to seed-starting fact sheets from the WSU Spokane County Master Gardeners that I think will be helpful to you:
Also, I wanted to let you know about an upcoming class that is always excellent. On Mar. 24, Master Gardener and greenhouse owner Steven Nokes will give a presentation on "Easy Ways to Propagate Seeds With or Without A Greenhouse." I've been to his classes before and Steve does a terrific job of explaining how to start plants from seeds and cuttings. It would be well worth your time. The class is free and is being sponsored by The Friends of Manito. It will be held in the Manito Meeting Room, just east of the Gaiser Conservatory at Manito Park. Call (509) 456-8038 for more details about the class and be sure to get there a bit early as it is always well-attended.
