Here is link to my column in today's edition of The Spokesman-Review: Give your seedlings a healthy head start.
In it, I outline several ways to protect young plants from the elements so they can get off to a good start. One of the best ways to protect them is with floating row cover. You can find it at NW Seed & Pet or online.
If you scroll down this page and refer to my post, "Veggie garden update," you can see some of the floating row cover in the background of the photo that accompanies the post. You can click on the photo to view a larger image.
We placed hoops made from leftover plastic sprinkler pipe over the bed to support the row cover and we have weighted down the edges with bricks.
The raised bed in the foreground is covered with bird netting to protect our lettuce seedlings from pesky birds who apparently enjoy visiting salad bars. (sigh) We'll keep the netting over the lettuce for the entire season.
