Sept. 9 column

Here is a link to my column in today's edition of The Spokesman-Review: Struggle with houseplants? Give African violets a try.

Over the past few years, I've had an annual tradition of profiling interesting houseplants near the end of the growing season. Since our outdoor gardens are winding down, our thoughts certainly turn toward indoor activities. And for those of us who are fanatical gardeners, we still need to be able to play in the dirt, right? Growing houseplants fulfills that need for me.

So this year, I decided to write about growing African Violets. They are so easy to grow and there are so many different blossom colors and styles to enjoy. They make a terrific addition to any room in the house. If you don't already have African Violets, I hope you will give them a try.
