While I was at the Natural Living Show today, I saw the coolest garden product and thought you would be interested in hearing about it.
It's called the Tower Garden. Their literature describes it as "a state-of-the-art vertical aeroponic growing system... perfect for rooftops, patios, balconies, terraces -- just about any relatively sunny place outside."
At the display, I spoke to Patrice Lynn, who is a Tower Garden rep. She had one that was growing all sorts of produce: strawberries, broccoli, zucchini, kale, Swiss chard and tomatoes, to name a few. You could tell they'd been harvesting veggies from the plants, so they weren't just there for looks.
It's made from food-grade plastic that has planting holes in it. There is a water pump and timer to free you from watering duties, and comes with 20 wool seed-starter cubes as well as seeds. There's also plant food and a pH test kit. I was amazed by how abundant the tower was.
Now I have to admit the whole kit is a bit pricey (a single payment of $499, or 12 monthly payments of $43), but it's an ideal solution for folks who don't have a garden space and/or a shortage of time but want to grow their own healthy and nutritious produce.
This is what the kit looks like so you can get a better feel for how the tower is built:
