Flower Show reports: Cool shrub

While at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show this week, a very cool shrub caught my eye. And guess what? It will grow in USDA zone 5!

It is the Contorted Flowering Quince. It was very hard to do the plant justice with photos because of the challenging lighting conditions at the show but you get the idea. And you can click on the photos to see a larger image.

The contorted branches have that cool factor and the beautiful white blossoms stopped everyone who walked by dead in their tracks.

I see that it's available through Raintree Nursery (www.raintreenursery.com) and many others, so you might want to check it out. It grows in zones 5-9 and will reach 2 to 3 feet in height. The information I found says you can even bring some of the branches indoors to force them to bloom. How cool is that?
