Are you growing artichokes this year? Ever since I wrote about them in late April, I've been hearing from local garden centers that artichoke seedlings have been a hot commodity. That's so cool! I'm tickled that folks are giving them a try.
I mentioned a while back that half of the artichoke plants we grew last year over-wintered, which is unheard of in these parts. Ordinarily, they have to be grown as annuals due to our cold winter temperatures but they apparently liked the milder winter we had. The plants are growing great and last night, I noticed the first artichoke is forming already. Isn't it cute?
It's not too late to add a few plants to your garden. Just give them a nice, sunny spot and regular water. And give them some room, maybe about 2 feet between plants since they grow so large. The leaves are really attractive so they'll add interest to your garden as well.
